Join Nico & Belinda of Cooking Passions Cooking School, in collaboration with Chef Penny Williams (Bali Asli Restaurant & Cooking School – Bali) as we escort a small group of twelve travellers on another of our “hand-picked”  cuisine & culture exploration, this time to discover the spring wildflowers, history and hidden treasures of Western Australia’s oldest European settlement situated on Ballardong Noongar land along the Avon River.
After thousands of years of occupation by Ballardong Noongar people, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1831 with a town established in 1835 and its first building erected in 1836. The region was important throughout the 19th century for sheep and grain farming and was renowned for its sandalwood trade. York boomed during the gold rush as the last rail stop before the walk to the goldfields. Nowadays, it is a picturesque town that caters for day-trippers from Perth who want to enjoy the charms of its heritage buildings, quaint cafes & pubs, and stunning countryside walks.

ITINERARY

Saturday October 9th 2021

08:00 – Group Departure* from Urban Provider/Cooking Passions Cooking School (Leederville)

Meet Nico for a group departure* with our arranged chauffeured bus for the picturesque short 90km journey to York. Either get dropped off or catch an Uber
* City of Vincent Ticket Parking is available on Vincent Street from 7am to Midnight at $3.00 per hour to a maximum of $18.50 per day. Alternatively, arrange to be dropped off or catch an Uber.
* If you prefer to self-drive so that you can stay longer in the Avon Valley or spend the night in York or Northam, you are welcome to follow the bus.

09:30 – Olive Oil & Woodfired Bakery Experience

Although we are outside of the olive harvest period, we will visit one of the region’s first commercial olive producers where we will learn about how olives are processed to produce “extra virgin olive oil”. We will also have the opportunity to visit a hand-built wood fired oven which produces delicious sourdough bread!

10:15 – Picnic Aperitivo (Morning Tea)

With a supply of just foraged extra virgin olive oil, freshly baked wood-fired bread and some other delicious condiments, we will set up a creek-side picnic to enjoy a glass of bubbles for our “morning aperitivo”!

11:00 – York Town Hall Experience

We will step back in time and explore York’s magnificent Town Hall. Constructed in 1911, York’s Town Hall is a significant part of York’s townscape and a fine example of Edwardian opulence with its columns, ornate facade and significant fanlight over the main entrance.
We have arranged for a private tour* of this grand building which will take us on a journey through the past history of the Town hall, reimagine the days of wealth and prosperity, it’s halcyon and hey days while enabling us to get up close to one of WA’s most iconic buildiings.

*OPTIONAL (own cost) – If vintage cars are more to your liking, you are welcome to head down the road to the York Motor Museum to explore a fascinating collection of cars and motorcycles dating back over 100 years of motoring in Australia. You can then meet back up with us after.

13:00 – Movable Feast Chef’s Lunch (BYO)

Bring along your favourite wine or beverages to enjoy as Nico & Penny serve up a relaxed three-course Movable Feast Chef’s lunch with stunning views over York and the surrounding countryside.
