Crete: Island of Myths, Mountains & Flavours

The largest of Greece’s Islands, and the birthplace of Zeus, Crete is an idyllic world where the snow-capped mountains meet the sea.
It is a land where myth and beauty intertwine — an island of golden beaches, rugged mountains, and fertile valleys alive with vineyards and olive groves. Explore ancient wonders like the legendary Palace of Knossos – Greece’s second most important monument after Athens’ Acropolis and home of the legend of the Minotaur – and stunning Venetian harbours that whisper tales of history, or wander through vibrant villages where traditions thrive. Whether you’re basking on crystal-clear shores or tracing the footsteps of Minoan kings, Crete offers an unforgettable blend of culture, flavour, and breathtaking landscapes.

Friday 02 October 2026 – Arrival in Chania

Chania – Located on the northwest coast of Crete, Chania is a city steeped in history, shaped by successive civilisations over thousands of years.
Originally the site of ancient Kydonia, a prominent Minoan city dating back to 5,000BC, it later flourished under Classical Greek, Roman, and Byzantine rule. The Venetians transformed it into a major cultural and trade hub, fortifying it with impressive architecture still visible today. Four hundred years of Ottoman rule brought mosques and Eastern influences, while modern history saw Chania play a key role in Crete’s unification with Greece and in World War II.
Today, Chania is a vibrant coastal city where Minoan ruins, Venetian harbours, and Ottoman remnants coexist, offering travelers a rich, living tapestry of Crete’s diverse past.
15:00pm – Following your flight arrival into Chania Airport, we have arranged for your private Airport Pickup and Transfer to our accommodation at the SanSal Boutique Hotel .
Check in is from 15:00pm, however if you arrive earlier please don’t hesitate in leaving your bags at reception to either go for a walk into Chania’s Old Town or relax poolside at the hotel’s beautiful rooftop pool and bar.

Saturday 03 October 2026 – Chania & Olive Oil Heritage

08:30am – If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to acquaint yourself with Chania, join Nico for a short morning walk as you familiarise yourself with the charms of Chania’s Old Town and ancient Venetian Harbour.
10:00am – Group Departure for our Cretan Olive Oil Experience & Traditional Village Lunch in a small village in the countryside above Chania.
Crete & its Olive Oil Heritage
Olive oil production in Crete is an ancient tradition dating back over 4,000 years, rooted deeply in the island’s culture, economy, and cuisine. Thanks to Crete’s mild Mediterranean climate, rich soil, and native olive varieties (especially the Koroneiki olive), the island produces some of the finest extra virgin olive oil in the world.
Crete’s olive oil is not just a product—it’s a symbol of heritage and daily life, used generously in local dishes, rituals, and even skincare. Whether produced by large cooperatives or small family estates, olive oil in Crete remains a cornerstone of the island’s identity.
13:00pm – Visit to Vouves, home to the world’s oldest olive tree estimated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 years old, with some studies suggesting it may be over 5,00 years old. The tree is still producing olives to this day, which are highly prized and used to make a limited amount of commemorative olive oil.
The tree is a powerful symbol of Cretan identity, resilience, and the long history of olive cultivation on the island. Locals call it “I Elijah,” which means “the olive”. Its branches have been used for wreaths at major sporting events such as the 2004 Athens Olympics, further highlighting its cultural importance. 

13:30pm – Group lunch at a family-run taverna nestled in the mountains west of Chania. The taverna offers authentic Cretan cuisine and a warm, laid-back atmosphere. Many dishes are cooked using wood-fired ovens and open fires, crafted from fresh, organic produce grown in their own garden

Sunday 04 October 2026 – Flavours of Chania

10:00am – Food Walking Tour of Chania – This morning we will embark on an immersive walking tour which winds through the atmospheric alleyways of Chania’s Old Town, where centuries of history meet the vibrant flavours of Crete.
Led by our passionate local guide, you’ll sample iconic street foods like warm bougatsa, flaky kaltsounia, rich cheeses, local olives, and juicy souvlaki—each bite rooted in tradition. Along the way, we will visit hidden eateries, spice shops, and family-run cafés, gaining insight into Chania’s culinary heritage and the stories behind its beloved dishes.

Monday 05 October 2026 – Free Day / Western Crete Beaches

Today is a Free Day totally at your leisure. Decide to explore more of Chania at your own pace, spend a little time poolside at the hotel’s rooftop pool, or decide to venture further afield to explore some of Crete’s beaches.
OPTIONAL – Western Crete Beaches – For those that would like to explore some of Crete’s most famous beaches, Western Crete boasts a stunning array of beaches, including the well-known destinations of Balos and Elafonisi, as well as some hidden gems favoured by locals. These beaches range from Elafonisi’s famous pink sand lagoons to Balos & Gramvousa’s long sandy stretches with crystal-clear waters.

Tuesday 06 October 2026 – Crete Wine Country

Nestled in the fertile heart of Crete, the wine regions of Archanes and Peza are among the island’s oldest and most celebrated.
With a winemaking history dating back over 4,000 years to the Minoans, these areas are renowned for their rolling vineyards, rich volcanic soils, and indigenous grape varieties.
Today, the island’s winemakers blend ancient tradition with modern craftsmanship, producing award-winning wines from unique local grapes like aromatic Vidiano, crisp Vilana, and bold reds such as Kotsifali and Mandilari. From sun-kissed coastal plains to cool mountain slopes, Crete’s diverse terroir creates wines as varied as its landscapes.

Archanes is a picturesque, traditional village located just south of Heraklion, nestled in the fertile hills beneath Mount Youchtas. Wednesday 07 October 2026 – Cretan Cooking Experience & The Palace of Knossos

10:00am – 13:00pm – Cretan Cooking Experience – We will join one of Archanes finest chef’s for a Cretan Cooking Class at his local restaurant. 
Remainder of the afternoon at your leisure, prior to our departure for Crete’s famous Palace of Knossos.
16:00pm – Group Departure for our Private Archaeologist Guided Tour of Knossos, one of Greece’s most important historical monuments.
The Palace of Knossos

The Palace of Knossos is Greece’s second-most visited archaeological site after the Acropolis. Situated just outside of Archanes, this awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage site is the heart of Europe’s first advanced civilisation and the legendary home of King Minos, The Labyrinth and the Minotaur.
it is a massive complex of 1,300 rooms, grand staircases, vibrant frescoes, cisterns, and terracotta pottery that allow a small peek into Minoan living dating back to 5,000BC.
Visiting Knossos is more than a journey into history — it’s an encounter with the birthplace of myth and the soul of ancient Crete.

Thursday 08 October 2026 – Heraklion & Archaeological Museum

10:00am – Group departure for our transfer to Crete’s capital – Heraklion.

Heraklion
Heraklion is a city of contrasts — where ancient walls guard a vibrant harbour, and centuries-old legends mingle with the hum of modern life.
Stroll through lively squares shaded by plane trees, sip coffee as locals share stories, and lose yourself in colourful markets overflowing with Cretan flavours. Just steps away, the world-renowned Archaeological Museum reveals treasures of the Minoan world, while the sea breeze carries whispers of seafarers who once sailed these shores. Both historic and cosmopolitan, Heraklion is a city that invites you to linger, taste, and feel the soul of Crete.
As the official gateway to Crete, this port city also offers some of the best options and ferry schedules to easily continue your exploration onto many of Greece’s most beautiful islands.
11:00am – Heraklion Archaeological Museum Private Guided Tour – The Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses one of the world’s most important collections of Minoan artefacts, offering a comprehensive look at Crete’s ancient civilisations, especially the Minoan culture. It is a must-visit for history lovers, especially when paired with our visit to the Palace of Knossos yesterday. 
Led by our Archaeologist guide, she we will highlight some of the museum’s most important pieces including:

pm – Remainder of the afternoon & evening free. This afternoon is an opportunity to visit one of Greece’s many famous beach bars for an afternoon of sea, sand & cool vibes, situated just outside the city centre.

Friday 09 October 2026 – Heraklion & Spinalonga Island

OPTIONAL TOUR – Spinalonga Island Day Tour and Boat Charter – for those that are interested in visiting Crete’s famous East Coast of Elounda & Agios Nikolaos, today we have arranged for a private guided, driver and boat charter to take us to visit Spinalonga Island, a small island with a powerful history. 

Spinalonga Island offers a unique blend of natural beauty and haunting history—beginning with its 16th-century Venetian fortress and extending to its poignant role as one of Europe’s largest leper colonies from 1906 to 1957. The island’s restored homes, hospitals, shops, and churches provide a deeply moving insight into the lives of those who lived in isolation, creating a powerful narrative of resilience amidst hardship.
Boat Cruise, Lunch & Swim – After our tour of Spinalonga we will enjoy a short boat ride with scenic coastal views. We will stop for lunch and a swim or snorkel in the East Coast’s crystal-clear waters before returning back to Heraklion.

For those not interested in the OPTIONAL Spinalonga Island and Boat Cruise, enjoy your last day in Crete either relaxing by the hotel’s rooftop pool or checking out the high streets of Heraklion’s shopping quarters.

DIY Greek Island Odyssey
(Saturday October 10th to Tuesday October 13th 2026)

Until the group reunites on the island of Sifnos on Tuesday June 3rd 2026, the next three days have been set aside for you to explore the Cyclades Island of your choice and at your own pace..
The port of Heraklion is the perfect setting-off point to reach some of Greece’s most famous islands recognised across the world for their iconic Greek-island attributes – white-washed homes, blue-domed monasteries, ancient windmills, rugged landscape and pristine beaches. 
While there are over 220 islands in this chain, 24 of them are inhabited and recognised as some of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations. 
The choice of which island you would like to visit is up to you and depends on what kind of experience you’re seeking. 
Here are a few suggestions:
Consider what kind of experience you are looking for and choose the island that best suits your preferences.
We can assist with arranging the appropriate ferries for you to arrive at the island of your choice, and to then arrive when we regroup in Sifnos on Tuesday June 3rd 2026.

Tuesday October 13th 2026 – Sifnos (GROUP REUNION & ARRIVAL)

Sifnos was our most favourite island we explored during our research trip to Greece! As well as Crete, it is what has sparked our love affair with Greece 
Today we will reunite as a group after your 3 day DIY Greek Island Odyssey sojourn on whichever Greek Island adventure you decided to visit after leaving Crete. Ferries into Sifnos tend to arrive from mid-afternoon through to early evening depending one which island you have departed.
pm (Sifnos Arrival) – Upon arrival into the port of Kamares, we suggest you hire a car for the three days we will be in Sifnos to allow you the ease of exploring the island, which is quite small and easily navigated. Alternatively, one of the island’s local taxis can be booked for your transfer to our hotel.

Sifnos
Known for its culinary scene and romantic hotels, Sifnos is a small Cycladic island known as the culinary soul of the  Cyclades, where food, tradition, and laid-back island life blend effortlessly. 
Sifnos owes its foodie reputation to its most famous descendant, Nicholas Tselementes, who wrote the first Greek cookbook in 1910. Forget souvlaki and gyros: here, chickpea croquettes and stewed capers are taverna staples. The island is peppered with potteries that produce the earthenware casseroles used for revitháda (baked chickpeas) and mastelo (lamb with red wine and dill).
Beyond the food, Sifnos offers charming whitewashed villages, scenic hikes, uncrowded beaches, and a relaxed, authentic vibe—perfect for travellers who appreciate local flavours, culture, and quiet beauty over the mainstream tourist trail.

Wednesday October 14th 2026 – Sifnos

10:00am – Sifnos Farm & Cooking Experience – For those that are interested, this morning we will visit the three generations farm of George & Dina Narlis to learn about the fascinating history of farming one of Greece’s most arid islands while preparing some of Sifnos famous recipes.
If you prefer to not join in, you are welcome to spend the morning & afternoon lazing around the beach on our doorstep or exploring some of Sifnos’ other sites at your leisure.

14:00pm – Remainder of the afternoon and evening to relax at the hotel’s beachside location, drive to one of the island’s famous beaches, visit one of the island’s picturesque whitewashed villages of Apollonia, Artemonas or Kastro, or take a drive up to one of Sifnos hilltop monasteries for a classic Cyclades sunset!

pm – Dinner at your leisure at one of island’s many excellent seaside restaurants just on our beachstep.

Thursday October 15th 2026 – Sifnos

Free Day for you to explore Sifnos in whichever fashion you’d like. Head up to Sifnos highest monastery or find another secluded beach to while away the afternoon.

After a dark decade on the brink of Grexit, Athens has morphed into Southern Europe’s capital of cool. Long weekenders are swooping in to check out the exciting food scene and check into the new wave of cool hotels in Athens. Artists and designers are settling in for good, lured by affordable rents, the promise of sunshine, and an anarchic spirit where you don’t have to play by the rules.
There’s nothing orderly about Athens: traffic is chaotic, life is messy, the architecture a mash-up of Byzantine and Bauhaus, neoclassical and nondescript.
The Parthenon still dominates the skyline – and will forever be one of the key things to do in Athens – but for most Athenians the antiquities embedded among tightly packed apartment blocks are an afterthought.

As Athens offers a huge range of accommodation options for travellers ranging from glamorous luxurious 5-star hotels with stunning Acropolis views to stylish boutique stays and bohemian B&Bs tucked into the city’s trendiest neighbourhoods, we are going to leave this choice to you.
We are more than happy to share with you which area we will be staying, and if you need help deciding some options, we’re here to offer tailored suggestions to help you find the perfect base for your Athens adventure.
Because the city centre is compact and walkable, we recommend staying near Syntagma Square, Monastiraki Square, or the vibrant Psirri district for easy access to key sights, food, and nightlife.
Once you have checked in to your preferred accommodation, you can leave the rest to us as we explore Athens together including:

Your Athens Arrival – Either Monday Sept 28th or Tuesday Sept 29th 2026

– Please arrange to arrive into Athens either Monday September 28th or Tuesday September 29th 2026 to suit your travel plans. Nico & Belinda will be arriving into Athens on Saturday September 26th for a few extra days of spending time in one of our favourite European cities prior to the group’s arrival.
– The Athen’s Airport is well connected via an Airport/City Metro or alternatively taxis are plentiful for the 45 minute trip into the centre of the city.
pm – Check into your chosen accommodation in Athens. Freshen up before heading out to experience the vibrancy of one of the world’s cities.
Sunset – We can arrange to meet up at one of Athen’s multitude of stylish rooftop bars with their uninterrupted views of the Acropolis at sunset.

Wednesday September 30th 2026 – Acropolis & Parthenon Guided Visit

08:00am – As the weather in Athens starts to heat up in May, we have arranged for an early Private Guided Visit to the Acropolis which opens at 08:00am. 
Private Guided Walking Tour of the Acropolis – Discover the iconic Acropolis of Athens through the eyes of a professional archaeologist on this private guided walking tour.
As we explore ancient marvels like the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike, our archeologist guide brings history to life with rich context, hidden details, and stories rooted in decades of archaeological knowledge. Perfect for history lovers and curious travellers alike, this tour offers a deeper, more meaningful understanding of Athens’ most legendary landmark in an intimate, personalized setting.

10:00am – After our Private Guided Tour of the Acropolis, join Nico for a relaxed return walk to visit some of Athen’s historical central monuments scattered through some of Athen’s most trendy and exiting neighbourhoods such as the Plaka, Monstiraki & Psirri.
Remainder of the afternoon at your leisure to do your own thing. We can decide as a group who would like to meet up for another evening of Acropolis View sunset drinks and decide who might like to dine together at a restaurant or taverna.

Thursday October 1st 2026 – Athens

10:00am – Private Athens Foodie Walking Tour – This morning we have arranged for a delicious journey through the heart of Athens with this immersive food walking tour, where history and flavour come together in the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. 17:00pm – Private Evening Guided Tour of the New Acropolis Museum – This evening we will meet again with our professional archaeologist for a private guided tour of the New Acropolis Museum and an up-close viewing of some of the Acropolis’ significant pieces.

The New Acropolis Museum – The architectural marvel which opened in 2009 is a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient history, art, or Greek culture. Located at the foot of the Acropolis, this award-winning modern museum offers a breathtaking setting to explore one of the world’s most significant archaeological collections. It showcases masterpieces from the Acropolis—like the Parthenon Sculptures (Marbles), Caryatids, and ancient Greek artefacts—with natural light, spacious galleries, and direct views of the Acropolis itself.
The museum is thoughtfully designed to bring you up close & personal with ancient Athens through interactive displays, a glass floor revealing excavated ruins, and expert curation that brings 2,500 years of history to life.

pm – Remainder of the evening at your leisure to do your own thing. We can decide as a group who would like to meet up for another evening of Acropolis View sunset drinks and decide who might like to dine together at a restaurant or taverna.
See you all at the airport tomorrow morning for your chosen flight to Chania, Crete to commence our “Discover Crete & Greek Island Odyssey Experience”.

Booking Deposit: A $AUD2,500 per person non-refundable* Booking Deposit is required to hold a booking for the tour, at the time of your reservation. Booking Deposits are used to pay necessary accommodation deposits with our Greece accommodation & service providers at the time of booking. (*We are able to refund any Booking Deposits if we can fill your cancelled places with another traveller)

Final Payment: Payment in full is required at least 120 days prior to departure – 28 May 2026
Final Payment will be converted from €EUR to $AUD based on the prevailing Foreign Cash Currency Exchange rate at the time of payment.

Cancellation: We understand that unexpected events do occur in life and no one books a trip with the intention of cancelling. Our GREEK Sojourn - May 2026

If you’re considering visitng Greece – don’t hold back. DO IT! You’ll be in the best hands ever, with Nico and Belinda, guiding us around Athens, showing us the best eating spots, the famous icons and of course, hidden speciality places that are only frequented by locals! We absolutely loved Crete with its colourful history and renowned cuisine. A definite favourite in my culinary experiences. I’ve already made one of the local specialties at home to share with my family, who loved it as much as we did. History buffs will have their cups overflow with amazing insights to times long ago with personal knowledgeable tour guides, both in Athens and Crete. Our private tours were so informative and interesting, and we always seemed to miss the crowds. And for those who just wish to “veg out” in the azure blue seas and gorgeous villages, this tour ticks this box as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Greece and a couple of its idyllic islands and would thoroughly recommend putting this tour on your bucket list. Such a fun time had by all! Thanks Nico & Belinda.
