Join Nico & Belinda of Cooking Passions Cooking School, as we escort a small group of twelve travellers (maximum) on another of our “hand-picked”  food, wine, and exploration experiences, this time to Western Australia’s magical Southern Forests regions of Manjimup and Pemberton.
On our research trip to the region, Belinda & I were blown away by the sheer scale of agricultural production that takes place only 300 km south of Perth in what is regarded as Western Australia’s “premier food bowl”.
Sure we knew of the region’s –
but what we had never really explored on previous visits was the vast amount and sheer variety of crops that are grown in the area and the stories of the passionate generations of family growers that work tirelessly to provide these to us.
Made up of more than 50 nationalities, these growers live on the myriad of farmlets and farms that produce over 50 different types of fruits and vegetables, truffles, nuts, award-winning wines, beef, sheep, pork and dairy. The Southern Forests region is heavily invested in agriculture, with $230 million of agricultural production coming from the region.
Amongst a much wider variety of produce, the Southern Forests predominantly produces:
So if you have ever wanted to get up close and personal with some of the most delicious produce ever farmed in Western Australia, then join us for this special 5 Day/4 Night  “Southern Forests Luxury Black Truffle Hunt, Food and Wine Producers Experience “ where we will visit some of the region’s incredible producers to hear their unique stories of what life is like as a primary producer and, more importantly, taste and cook with some of their exceptional products including Manjimup’s famed Black Perigord Truffles which will have just come into season.

Established in 2004 by Dion and Sharon Rangé, Stonebarn Truffière & Luxury Lodge produce exceptional quality premium French Périgord Black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) and related products in the heart of Australian truffle country, with its first Stonebarn truffle found on 5 June, 2010.
Stonebarn is a 2,000+ tree truffière set on a 160 acre estate, amongst lush forest, rivers and dams in the picturesque region of Manjimup and Pemberton,Western Australia. The tranquil natural surroundings, forest trails and secluded bush bath make it a unique venue in the South West to make memories with family and friends.
The Stonebarn luxury accommodation is limited to 16 people and includes:

We have hired out the Lodge for our group to stay exclusively over the four nights that we will explore the Southern Forests region. As such, we will have private use of the entire lodge and will be responsible for our own catering. Also, daily servicing of rooms will not be carried out over our 4 night stay, as the property does not have in-house staff.

Tuesday (Day 2) – Manjimup

am – Continental Breakfast at your leisure.  We will “help you to help yourself” to a Continental Breakfast of seasonal fruits, toast & conserves, and  yoghurt & muesli, while you are more than welcome to prepare your own eggs if you would like in the Stonebarn kitchen.
9:30am to 15:30pm – Manjimup Food & Wine Producers Experience
Following breakfast we have arranged for a Chauffeured Tour to a number of Food & Wine Producers in the Manjimup region, where we will meet with the area’s passionate growers to hear their stories of life on the land and how & what they are producing, with tastings of their products along the way.

Manjimup, Western Australia

This relaxed town is nestled in amongst “the giants”, one of Manjimup’s proudest natural attraction; the karri tree. The forested areas surrounding Manjimup may have started out as timber country, but today the region is best known for its myriad fresh produce. Intermingled with tall karri forest, the surrounding farmlands take centre stage in a thriving fruit and vegetable industry.

The famous ‘Pink Lady’ apple was developed in Manjimup more than 50 years ago and the horticultural industry has continued to evolve since then, with new pursuits including avocado farming, green tea, finger limes and the rare gourmet black truffle. You can pick up the freshest produce straight from the farm gate including apples, pears, cherries, nectarines, kiwi fruit, chestnuts, hazelnuts, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and corn.

While we visit the various producers and wineries, take advantage of purchasing their wonderfully fresh local produce and wines directly from the farm gate and vineyards, to enjoy at home and to support these incredible family operated businesses.
16:00pm – Private Chef Dinner – Manjimup
Before we depart Manjimup to return to our accommodation at Stonebarn, we will enjoy an early Private Chef dinner prepared with seasonal local ingredients at one of our favourite, almost secret, dining experiences in town. After dinner, we will then return back to Stonebarn

(Included Meals – Continental Breakfast, Tour Tastings, Private Chef Dinner)

Wednesday (Day 3) – Pemberton

am – Continental Breakfast at your leisure.  We will “help you to help yourself” to a Continental Breakfast of seasonal fruits, toast & conserves, and  yoghurt & muesli, while you are more than welcome to prepare your own eggs if you would like in the Stonebarn kitchen.
9:30am to 13:30pm – As we did yesterday in Manjimup, today we will visit food & wine producers around the charming town of Pemberton where we will enjoy a Private Wine Tasting and Private Honey Experience.

Pemberton, Western Australia

Majestic forests, exemplary wines and scrumptious farm gate produce make this a must-see stopover on a Western Australian culinary odyssey. Pemberton’s timber heritage is evident through the quaint streetscapes that remain intact from the town’s settlement days and the myriad timber artisan products for sale throughout the shops. The town is considered so well preserved that it was chosen as the setting for the recent Australian film adaption of Jasper Jones, set in a fictional regional WA town in the 1960s.

The Pemberton area produces excellent quality wines. Growing conditions are ideal for pinot noir and chardonnay grapes and suit the production of refined Bordeaux-style wines. Other grape varieties grown in the Pemberton Wine Region are sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, Semillon and shiraz. It’s been noted that Pemberton is one of the few regions within Australia that offers fantastic potential for merlot.

14:00pm – 16:00pm – Group Restaurant Lunch in Pemberton
pm – Evening at your leisure at Stonebarn.

(Included Meals – Continental Breakfast, Group Lunch)

Thursday (Day 4) – Manjimup Black Truffle Experience & Hunt

am – Continental Breakfast at your leisure.  We will “help you to help yourself” to a Continental Breakfast of seasonal fruits, toast & conserves, and  yoghurt & muesli, while you are more than welcome to prepare your own eggs if you would like in the Stonebarn kitchen.

Manjimup Black Truffles
Manjimup is home to Australia’s first mainland truffles and a very successful exporter, now ranked as the largest producer of black Périgord truffles in the southern hemisphere. Top restaurants throughout the world use Manjimup truffles, from Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Napa and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck in England. The Western Australian truffle industry is based on this Périgord truffle (Tuber melanosporum) grown in association with hazelnut trees (Corylus avellana) and oak trees (mainly Quercus robur and Q. ilex). Seedlings are inoculated with fungal spores from mature truffles before being planted out into orchards (or trufferies). Truffle production usually begins five to seven years after planting.

10am – 12noonManjimup Black Truffle Experience & Hunt
This morning we will step foot just outside the front door of our accommodation at Stonebarn’s Lodge and onto Stonebarn’s Truffière. With its over 2,000+ hazelnut and oak orchards we will experience our own private “truffle hunt”. Here on the truffière we will have the opportunity to unravel the mystique & misunderstandings of the ubiquitous “black truffle” and find out what all the fuss is for these much sought after expensive and funky smelling fungi. We’ll also learn about how the highly trained truffle dogs sniff their way through the orchards in search of Stonebarn’s valuable Black Périgord Truffle.

Afternoon at your Leisure – This afternoon has been set aside for those of you that might like to further explore the region at your leisure or to simply cozy up indoors with a glass of wine and a book to chill out. Alternatively, join Nico in the Stonebarn kitchen where we will start preparing ingredients for tonight’s Final Group Dinner, using some of the regions locally foraged produce including our freshly dug Stonebarn Black Périgord Truffles from this morning.
Suggested visits:
  • Visit Manjimup’s Power Up Electricity Museum which showcases the history of electricity in Western Australia from the 1800s – 1900s, through modern exhibitions, engaging displays and interactive building features.
18:00pm – Final Group Dinner

Friday (Day 5) – Departures and Au Revoir

am – Breakfast at your leisure before we say our final group goodbyes. Continue to explore more of the Southern Forests & Valleys beauty or return back to Perth after a week of good eating, drinking, and exploring! Au revoir!!
